If you have ever encountered a clogged drain in your home, you know that it’s anything but pleasant. However, while it may have seemed to have just come up out of nowhere, it may be an inevitable consequence of the way you’ve been treating your drain over time.
Here are some things that may have lead to that despicable clog in the first place:

Cooking Grease
When you whip up certain dishes on the stove, there tends to be a cooking byproduct leftover — such as grease. And while it seems as if the closest drain is the best place to dispose of it, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
As it turns out, the hot cooking byproduct will cool and harden once it comes in contact with the cold drain pipe. When this happens, over time, the grease will narrow the passage for water to escape — eventually leaving you with a clogged drain on your hands.
To avoid this, consider carefully pouring the cooking grease into an old container or tin can to let it cool and harden. Once the cooking byproduct is a solid, toss the entire container into a nearby garbage can.
Large Pieces of Food
Another common way that a clog can form is by placing the wrong food leftovers down your drain. Even if you have a garbage disposal intact, here are some of the edible items you’ll want to toss out in the trash, instead:

Leftover, dense animal bones (i.e., chicken wings)

Stringy, starchy foods (i.e., spaghetti)

Fruit pits (i.e., peaches)
Being conscious of what you put into your drain can help you out in the long run — because not only can these foods create a clog within the drainpipe, but if they linger around long enough, they can cause a foul odor.
Loose Garbage
Sometimes, you may feel inclined to take the plastic seal off a bottle of shampoo and shove it down the drain — instead of disposing of it in a nearby garbage can. And while this can seem harmless at first, it can create a pretty severe clog.
Here are a few of the many things you should avoid poking down the drain at all costs (no matter how small they may seem):
