How To Avoid Common Holiday Drain and Sewer Problems

Plumbing Problems Spike During the Holidays

Believe it or not, one of the most festive times of the year also happens to be one of the most problematic times for your home’s plumbing. From disposing of cooking byproducts down your sink drain to relatives flushing odd and ends down the guest bathroom toilet (i.e., candy wrappers), there’s always room for a plumbing problem to occur at the most inconvenient time.

However, if you’re looking to prevent a plumbing nightmare from happening during your celebrations, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

Holiday Drain and Sewer Tips

Don’t Treat Your Drain Like a Garbage Can

Your garbage disposal is not a garbage grinder! Things that you should never put down your drain include grease, fats, or oils (from cooking). Additionally, coffee grounds, bones, eggshells, pasta, rice, and slices of bread should also be tossed in the trash — not into your disposal. If they are put into your garbage disposal, these items will either build up and clog your drain or will dull the garbage disposal’s blade.

The Only Thing That Should Be Flushed Is Toilet Paper

Items such as hair, paper products (other than toilet paper), candy wrappers, fibrous materials, cat litter, feminine hygiene products, and even other “flushable” products just don’t break down quickly (or thoroughly) enough to be handled by septic or sewage lines. Also keep in mind that prescription medications, lotions, and cosmetics that are safe for your body can be potentially toxic to wildlife and/or leech into our drinking water.
